Brothers in Arms

During his studies at the Finnish Art Academy, Eronen made a trip across war-torn Europe, and in fact he had already experienced war as a child, as a refugee from Finnish Karelia, displaced three times during World War II. He enlisted in the air force at the age of 16 during the last stages of the war.

Eronen’s personal experience on this study trip, especially the sight of the ruins of Cologne Cathedral, marked him for life. It is also reflected in his art.  Finnish identity and the survival of Finnish culture are constant themes, especially in his public monuments and statues. His wartime experience also shaped his view of Finnish society and his patriotic outlook.

The work portrays the strong grip of a soldier supporting his weakened comrade, seen against a grenade explosion in the background.

The memorial was commissioned by veterans from Järvenpää and it is located in Tuusula.
